What is Boat Draft?

As you compare boat models, one thing you’ll see is lots of numbers inside of specification tables. From beam to deadrise, maximum horse power to transom height,  one very important spec you don’t want to overlook is known as, “draft”. Regardless of your first thoughts, draft in the boating world has nothing to do with barley or hops but instead it’s the distance between the waterline and the deepest point of the hull (keel).

The Importance of Draft

Before purchasing a boat you’ll need to determine how and where you plan to use it. For example, if you want to drift or pole the flats you’ll need a smaller draft whereas if you’re running bays or offshore, a higher draft is less of a concern as there’s typically deeper water.
